Mastering for Streaming — Getting Commercial Loudness

Mastering is the final stage of audio production — preparing your mix for distribution to streaming platforms, physical media, and broadcasting. The goal: make it loud, clear, and competitive without distortion or pumping. This is the step that gives your music the professional polish it needs to compete with major label releases.

What is LUFS?

LUFS (Loudness Units Full Scale) is the standard measurement used by all major streaming platforms to normalize audio levels. If your master is louder than their target, platforms will turn it DOWN. If it's quieter, they may turn it up (but this adds noise). Targeting -14 LUFS gives you the best result across all platforms — loud enough to compete, optimized for normalization.

The Complete Mastering Chain

1

Linear Phase EQ

Gentle tonal balance across the full spectrum. Never more than 3dB of boost or cut. Reduce low end buildup (HPF at 20–30Hz). Add subtle air boost (high shelf +1–2dB at 15kHz). Fix any tonal imbalances from the mix.

2

Multiband Compressor

Frequency-specific dynamic control. Use 3–4 bands. Tighten the low end without affecting the mids. Control harsh high-mids without dulling the presence. Gentle settings — this is control, not character compression.

3

Stereo Imager

Width enhancement and stereo field control. Keep everything below 200Hz in mono (prevents bass issues on mono systems). Gently widen mid and high frequencies for a bigger, more open sound. Don't over-widen — it creates phase issues.

4

Saturation

Subtle harmonic warmth and analog character. Use a tape saturation or subtle tube saturation at 2–5% drive. This adds the analog "glue" that makes digital masters feel warm instead of clinical. Less is more here.

5

True Peak Limiter

Final loudness stage. Set ceiling at -1dBFS (true peak). Push the threshold until you hit your target LUFS. Use a quality limiter (Ozone Maximizer, FabFilter Pro-L2, or Waves L2). Don't over-limit — preserve dynamics. Aim for -14 LUFS integrated.

6

LUFS Meter — Verify and Confirm

Measure your final integrated LUFS (not momentary). A free option: Youlean Loudness Meter. Target: -14 LUFS ± 1dB for streaming. Export as 24-bit WAV at 44.1kHz. This is your master file.

Self's Pro Tip

Your mix is 80% of the master. If the mix is bad, mastering can't fix it — it can only make a bad mix louder. Get the mix right first. Only take a track to the mastering stage when the mix sounds 90% of the way to professional already. Mastering is the polish on the car — the car still has to be well-built underneath.
